Drugs called ARVs or anti-retrovirals are actually a combination of drugs that are used to treat opportunistic infections (TB, some types of cancer, skin diseases etc) that occur when once a person has AIDs. It is not a single magic pill invented to treat AIDs but some of the drugs have previously been used over decades to treat other illnesses that do are not linked or related to HIV/AIDs. Opportunistic diseases are those that attack the body once it has been weakened by AIDs. The body can be attacked by many diseases because when one has AIDs the immune system gets weak.
