      Melanin, a colour pigment in human beings. Africans, have high amount of melanin. The more melanin you have the darker you appear. Melanin protects our skin cells from damage by the sun. That is why when you have been working/sitting outside for many hours you also get darker. It is the natural way for the skin to protect itself.
