Common cold is caused by different types of viruses. Human beings have strong immunity against these viruses and that is why it normally goes away on its own after 3-5 days. Meaning your body kills the virus cells. Taking antibiotics will not help to cure a cold.

If a “cold” takes longer than a week, then it may not be a common cold.
