Plants take in carbon dioxide through small holes mainly found on the surfaces of their leaves. When exposed to sunlight, the stomata open wide to let in carbon dioxide which penetrates other cells. This facilitates photosynthesis where energy and oxygen are produced. The stomata open again to let out oxygen. The word stomata means “mouth” in Greek.

NB: This process of breathing in carbon dioxide by plant is especially important since excess carbon dioxide in the air leads to global warming.
