A scientist is a person who uses systematic methods to study the world we live in. Scientists are normally placed in two very broad categories; social and natural scientists. Social scientists study the actions and behaviour of individuals and communities. We all belong to different communities, these can include an entire country, your family, school, a sports team among others. Social scientists seek to understand how these communities are organised. Natural scientists on the other hand study the physical world. Their work may focus on a particular micro-organism, biological processes or even the formation of planets and stars. Therefore, scientists use well designed methods to describe, explain and predict the social and physical world. Examples of scientists include microbiologists, epidemiologists, economists, sociologists and astrophysicists.

A scientist is a person who uses the “scientific method” of systematically observing, measuring and experimenting to test ideas. It is away of thinking. Scientist avoid relying on hearsay and seek to observe (see) and measure what they study. It also means that whatever you do can be repeated by someone else. As a scientist you also must critically think of all the information you get. Meaning you question information based on other information to decide if it is true or not.

As a profession, a scientist uses the methods to understand problems in biology, chemistry, society (social scientist, political scientist), economics (economist), or engineering (material scientist, phycisist).
